Lots to share with you for the upcoming quarter: We have been doing some re-arranging at the store to make room for our growing selection of garment fabrics. We now have a sizable selection of linens and linen blends, a small but growing selection of knits, and a few fine whale corduroys and some double gauze. For those who like snuggly flannel for winter garments, we have our biggest ever selection of flannels. As of today, we now have a serger in our classroom to make our garment classes even better.
Our yarn rooms are sporting some new yarns and new samples. Cindy just finished a gorgeous sweater with Peace Fleece yarn. Mary finished a reversible cabled scarf with Plymouth Encore and a wonderful hat with Splatterdash. We have just replenished with a nice big order of Peace Fleece, and a couple of new colors of Spatterdash. We have a couple of new Trendsetter yarns that are bulky and very soft, one with cashmere and one with brushed alpaca that looks like a boucle….very nice texture. We have been having a great time shopping for specials for both knitters and quilters to offer during our Stuff Your Stocking event…can’t wait to start sharing those!!
Row by Row ended on September 6th. For those of you who would like kits, they will be available in the store and on our website on November 1st. Here is a picture of our row for 2016:
Do you have any interest in Crochet classes? If you do, would you please let us know what class times would work for you and any specific skills you are interested in learning….just drop us an email.
With our new classroom serger (provided by Portsmouth Sewing Center), we are also considering offering a one day serger class for any make or model. This class would be geared to helping people make friends with their sergers and become more familiar with the types of sewing that can be done with a serger. So let us know if this is a class you might like to take….right now we are thinking a one day class, most likely on a Saturday.
We still have a few spots available at our retreat in October (7-10) A wonderfully relaxing 4 day retreat at the Saco Convention Center in Saco, Maine. Endless sewing time with like-minded people, good food, and no household chores!! For More information, go to www.quiltportusa.com.
Nantucket Basket Class
Donele Monte, an accomplished weaver and fabulous teacher will be returning for a week-end Nantucket Basket Class on October 29 and 30. Donele has literally hundreds of basket molds to choose from, and supplies the finest basketry materials….it’s a great way to spend a week-end!! The cost of the class depends on the mold and materials selected. We do have a number of examples here at the shop.
These tuffets were one of our favorite finds at Quilt Market this year. If you haven’t made a tuffet, it is recommended that you start with a round one as they are slightly easier than the square. The sewing part is all foundation pieced, and we have the tools for the “construction” part of the process. We have Tuffet kits that include the tuffet form, the legs, the coverable button and the upholstery batting. The pattern comes with foundation fabric. We also have foundation fabric for purchase separately for those who already have the pattern. The class will be done in two three hour sessions held a week or two apart to allow adequate sewing time. The fee for the class is $35.00 for each of the two sessions. People may opt to just do part II of the class if they feel confident about the sewing portion. The next class will be October 22 and November 5th from 9 to 1pm.
Mary McFarland Class
We are so thrilled to have Mary McFarland doing a two day clothing class. In this class, you will make a basic shirt/tunic, with a choice of neck line and arm construction, and make a pattern to fit YOU. You will then construct a garment based on the pattern you create. Mary has a long history of making elegant one of a kind garments and we are so happy that she will teach this class! Because each student’s garment is tailored to them, the class size is limited to 5 students. This is a two day class held on two consecutive days, November 3rd and 4th, from 9:30 to 3:30. The cost of the class is $140.
Knitter Appreciation Day
Every year our customers knit hats for two very important efforts. One is the Caps for Kids program that distributes hats to children in the L/A area and surrounding communities during the winter months. The other effort is Click for Babies, which provides a purple hat to every child born in the greater L/A area as part of an educational effort to prevent child abuse.
For every hat brought into the store on 10/22, the knitter will receive any entry to win a $50 gift certificate. Each person who brings in a hat will also receive a 20% discount on all regularly priced merchandise on October 22. Our sincerest thanks for all the wonderful hats you have knit over the years, we appreciate your commitment to keeping the kids in our communities warm and safe.

Stuff Your Stocking
How does it work?
Every day between December 1 and December 12, we will email a photo and description of the special gift-of-the-day to all customers on our mailing list. If you want to reserve the item, simply e-mail us back by midnight that you would like it placed in your own personal “stocking.” The earlier you respond the better, as quantities may be limited. We will e-mail you back to confirm. What’s an example of a gift-of-the-day?
Each day we will offer a quilting item such as a colorful fabric bundle or useful notion. The knitting item may be yarn for a small project or a unique notion. If you’re both a quilter or knitter, you can reserve both items! Gifts will typically range in price from $5-40. You can reserve as few as 1 item, or as many as 12 (24 if you both knit and quilt). How do I pay and pick up my gifts?
Your “stocking,” full of your wrapped purchases, will be available for pickup at the store between December 16 and 22. You can pay for your entire purchase at that time. We can also ship it to you with a credit card payment.
